Protected Trees
This page covers the protection of trees using the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Acts.
Tree Preservation Orders
Trees deemed to be of landscape or amenity value may be protected by the Borough Council using their powers under the Town and Country Planning Acts. This is done by making Tree Preservation Orders. A TPO can cover a single tree, a group of trees or trees within an area of woodland. Penalties for carrying out unauthorised work to trees covered by a TPO can be very high, up to £20,000 per tree.
The Borough Council has a tree preservation orders page on their website which gives more information about the orders, the process for making them, guidance for owners of preserved trees and contractors wishing to undertake work to trees covered by an order. Also on the page is a very useful interactive map showing where the preserved trees are. If you click on a tree icons on the interactive map you can view the actual preservation order to which it relates, complete with the detailed map that accompanies each order.
You may be surprised at just how many TPO’s there are in Dersingham and how long many of them have been in place. The following link should take you directly to the Borough Council’s TPO page.

Trees in Conservation Areas
Trees with a trunk diameter of 75mm that are within a conservation area are automatically protected and penalties for carrying out unauthorised work are the same as for those covered by a TPO.
Please see the “Trees in a conservation area” page on the Borough Council’s website for more information and their interactive map.
